Topic of the Month - "The Perfect Job Posting"

The one thing that every client with whom Construction Jobs, Inc. works has in common is that when they come to us to search for someone to fill a need, they all want to try to find that “perfect candidate.” But more important than how hard we work is the precision and detail of the job posting that you create.

One thing we know is that “professional” postings attract “professional” people. Rest assured, we can make your posting as specific and attractive as you want: for example, Construction Jobs can place your company logo on your postings for a sharp, professional advertisement and one that lets your brand attract the eye of the thousands of professionals who recognize the icon that stands for your company. Once a candidate sees something noteworthy about your posting and stops to read more, you need to be prepared to gain his further interest.

Be specific and concrete when writing your posting: not only will you draw serious candidates who want to build your highway or your hotel, you can eliminate plenty of candidates whose experience does not match what you are demanding and offering. See the next article (“The Long and the Short of It”) to see a strong and specific job posting that attracts good candidates. Your posting can be as detailed as you’d like, meaning that you can include a brief company background, an explanation of your benefits package, a discussion of the growth and stability of your company.

A very useful service we offer is the widest exposure for your posting possible. We believe that when more construction specific candidates view your postings, you will get more of a targeted response to your post; therefore, we offer cross-posting alliances with AGC.org, NUCA.com, NAHB.org, GoJobs.com, PreferredJobs.com, TopUSAJobs.com, etc.

We all know that the best candidates do not stay in the job market for very long, so you need to let the candidates know why they should work for you and no one else. To be sure you get the “Most for Your Post,” call a Construction Jobs, Inc. representative today for more details.

The Long and the Short of It

There is very little we at Construction Jobs, Inc. haven’t seen when it comes to job postings and the candidates who respond to them. As the article above mentions, there is a science to attracting candidates who are able and qualified for the position you must fill. That science involves knowing the specifics of the position, envisioning an ideal candidate, and putting some concrete details into a posting that lets a candidate know what your company is all about and how the candidate’s personality needs to match your corporate identity.

Following are two actual job descriptions which clients have posted at Construction Jobs.com over the years. Of course we’ve changed names, places, dates, etc., but we think you will be able to tell which advertisement attracted strong candidates and yielded a very satisfied customer, and which one failed to attract any candidate response at all.

Example #1 is not an adequate description of a position: a candidate can respond, but does so blindly. That posting received almost no interest. Example #2 is brief but teeming with information relevant to the position and suggestive of a solid, growing company that treats its employees well. Examples #2 was a recent job posting that drew a great response.

Example 1

Need highway superintendent, apply by fax no. below.

Example 2

XYZ Contracting, LLC is a medium sized Heavy and Highway contractor located in Northern Florida. Founded in 2001, XYZ has been growing steadily and is in need of engineers and managers to administer projects.

The candidates should have 3 to 6 years experience in the Heavy / Highway field. This is not an entry level or training position. Experienced only need apply.

XYZ is an EEO employer and a drug free workplace. Great benefits include vacation, sick leave, 401K and hospitalization.

The potential for advancement is unlimited.
