I recently read the famous pamphlet entitled A Message to Garcia, written in 1899 by Elbert Hubbard. In the text, originally published in a magazine, Hubbard praises the initiative and determination displayed by an American soldier, Andrew Summers Rowan, who was tasked with landing on the coast of Cuba and going inland to find an ally of the Americans during the Spanish-American War, a certain General Garcia.
With no questions asked and no objections, Rowan undertakes and accomplishes the mission, drawing applause from Hubbard. Hubbard sees in Rowan a model for how every person ought to go about his or her work: faithfully, obediently, with resolve and a can-do spirit.
Hubbard concludes that anyone who can, metaphorically, deliver a message to Garcia, is someone who will always be beyond value in the business world. An employer or a client will be thrilled to have such a reliable and devoted employee on their team.
